In order to keep alive the memory of the great mountaineer who was buried in the ice of K2, the Friends of Lorenzo Fellowship promotes projects of assistance to the poor people of the Upper Braldo Valley whom Lorenzo met during his last expedition.

Since 1997 the Fellowship provides assistance to the families of Askóle and the nine surrounding villages. The Lorenzo Mazzoleni Dispensary is the only centre of health care in that area. It is organized and supervised by Maria Assunta Lenotti, an MD from Varese, Italy, who is assisted by other volunteer doctors and nurses.

There are two permanent local nurses, the married couple Zahra and Farman, who have completed their professional training and can attend periodical refresher courses thanks to the support of the Fellowship.
